THE HISTORY OF THE ECS

In the 1990s, researchers from the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) and The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) alongside research scientists from Israel and the United States made some important discoveries about the human body and brain, leading to a revolution in medical science and a better understanding of human health and the body’s ability to heal itself.

WHAT IS THE ECS?

The ECS is made up of 2 distinct receptors called CB1 & CB2. These receptors reside on the cell wall of millions of cells throughout the body. They are made up of 472 amino acids in a crumpled chain that squiggle back and forth like windshield wipers across these countless cell membranes. CB1 receptors exist on cells mostly in the brain, the brain stem, and the central nervous system, and CB2 receptors exist mostly in cells within the immune system, the peripheral nervous system, the gut, spleen, liver, heart, kidneys, bones, blood vessels, lymph cells, endocrine glands and reproductive organs. As you can see, the ECS is integral to maintaining a healthy body and mind.

WHAT CBD ACTUALLY DOES.

CBD’s only job is to trigger the ECS to manufacture endocannabinoids within the body as needed. The term “endo” means from inside or within the body. These “inside” cannabinoids are neurotransmitters. These chemical messengers are the critical component in helping nerve cells throughout the body communicate with each other. CBD works mostly on CB2 receptors to make endocannabinoids that communicate throughout the immune system.

MEET 2AG, THE BODY’S VERSION OF CBD.

CB2 receptors make the body’s version of CBD called 2AG or (2-Arachidonoylglycerol). This manufacturing process occurs when a CB2 receptor meets CBD molecules floating by. In an instant, enzymes within the cell make 2AG, which is a fatty acid neurotransmitter, whose short-lived job is to search for imbalances within the body that manifest in the form of stress, inflammation, and pain. Once found, 2AG communicates with local nerve cells in and around the area of concern to dial down the body’s typical response, resulting in a reduction or mitigation in levels of pain, stress, and inflammation. This type of retrograde signaling is unique to the ECS.
